How I Lost Weight

I was tired of being overweight and out of breath.  A gym membership could not help;  I do not know how to lift weights and the material I read online only confused me.  Motivation would wane quickly using a treadmill or elliptical.

Martial Arts seemed like a good possible solution.  I did not have to “work out” alone or feel foolish when I had trouble with gym equipment.  The class instructors and self defense material would keep me motivated.  The color belts were achievable, measurable goals.

The Academy of Hwa Rang Do was the most professional looking of the places I visited.  Master Kijek was well spoken, likable and calm.  His dojang was clean and well lit.  The other instructors and students were friendly.

It was difficult to walk out on the mat and join in my first class eighteen months ago.  Taking that step I discovered that the class curriculum was challenging and at the same time great fun!

As the weeks turned into months, I found myself surrounded by people who had become my friends.  These people trained hard, but safely.  I realized that I was happy to spend time with people who valued intangibles such as Honor and Trust.

Each new belt came with new challenges, and my new friends helped me rise to meet them.  I developed physically and mentally in this well rounded martial art.

Did the weight come off?  Yes, all that I wanted.  Of more significance is the fact that I have grown.

Respectfully submitted,
Mark Ihli
